Discover One-to-One Learning Benefits at Oxford Academy
We know the power of one-to-one learning and the importance of social and emotional growth through our student life programs, and I thought you might be interested in hearing about the outcomes we see for our grads at Oxford Academy. One of the top questions we hear is “How will learning one-to-one help my son in college?” I am reaching out to share some answers to this question.
One-to-One Learning Benefits: Proven by Research
The research on this is solid — educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom found that one-on-one instruction using mastery learning led to a two sigma (two standard deviations) improvement in student performance. The results were replicated. His research demonstrates that the average student receiving one-to-one instruction will outperform 98 percent of all other students in traditional group instruction.
The Oxford Approach to One-to-One Learning
Our founders were inspired by the one-to-one model at Oxford University when they started our school, and we know it helps students thrive in their education. Students learn how to learn at Oxford, and nothing can prepare them better for college. Finding their comfort level communicating with adults and advocating for themselves is also key for students’ future success.
One-to-One Learning Benefits in College and Career Readiness
That said, I think that our outcomes speak for themselves. I connected with some of our recent grads to check in and I want to share some of my findings with you.
Currently we have students at Syracuse, Queens College, RIT, Bryant College, Lynn University, Skidmore College, Penn State, Creighton University, Adelphi College, American University, Chapman College, University of Denver, Whittier College, Wheaton College, University of Rhode Island, University of Washington, Woodbury University, Emmanuel College, Roger Williams University and Albertus Magnus. One of our recent grads is in the U.S. Marines and another is in the U.S. Air Force.
Lasting Impact of One-to-One Learning Benefits on Students’ Lives
The students I spoke with agreed that the community and learning at Oxford Academy boarding school set the stage for their smooth transition to university life and their current success in classes and their college communities. Our graduates gain the self-determination and the self-discipline needed for success in higher education. Many shared that their comfort level approaching professors is a real benefit and they often help classmates do the same.
