Oxford Academy Supports Refugees Through IRIS 5K and Polar Plunge

Early in 2025, Oxford Nation, our student-led philanthropy club, came together to select a recipient for the funds raised through our dress-down Fridays. After thoughtful discussion, the club voted to support Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services (IRIS), an organization dedicated to helping refugees and displaced individuals rebuild their lives in Connecticut and beyond.

On February 9th, a dozen members of the Oxford Academy community traveled to New Haven to participate in the annual IRIS 5K Run for Refugees. They joined nearly 2,000 other runners in this inspiring event, demonstrating both their athletic dedication and their commitment to service. Thanks to the collective efforts of Oxford Nation, our school raised over $1,000 for IRIS—an incredible achievement that not only contributes to a meaningful cause but also fosters teamwork and school spirit.

Oxford Academy has a long-standing relationship with IRIS, supporting their mission for over a decade. Throughout the years, we have raised funds, invited IRIS representatives to campus to share their experiences, and engaged students in various initiatives to promote awareness and action. Before COVID-19, Oxford regularly brought students to New Haven to participate in the IRIS 5K, and after a few years of hosting a companion run on campus, we were excited to return in person this year.

Beyond the 5K, Oxford Nation continues its fundraising efforts with a Polar Plunge on February 4th—marking the third annual edition of this thrilling event. Each year, the plunge supports a different charity, and this time, the students have chosen IRIS as the beneficiary. Additionally, Oxford’s run club, which meets twice a week—even in the winter—has been training hard for the IRIS 5K, embracing the challenge with enthusiasm.

Shoutout to Eddie T ‘25 for this fun POV of last week’s Polar Plunge!

To further support IRIS, Oxford Academy is reaching out to its extended community, encouraging donations to supplement the funds raised through the 5K and the Polar Plunge. These efforts reflect the deep commitment of Oxford students to making a positive impact, both locally and globally.

Through physical endurance, teamwork, and generosity, Oxford Academy continues to embody the spirit of service. Way to make us proud, Oxford Nation!
